All About Termites and Why to Get Rid of Them

Termites are masters at hiding in your yard or home without being detected. All the while, they are feeding their appetites by burrowing into the wooden parts of your house and eating their fill. As they dine, they are weakening your home’s structure, which can cause beams to break and walls to collapse.

When they’re outside, they love consuming any type of cellulose, including live trees, dead trees and dead plants. Once they’ve invaded your dwelling, they might eat your furniture, shelving and even books.

Termites live in colonies. In the springtime, these winged vandals mature and swarm to their next breeding locale where they begin a new colony. They are drawn to light sources and can be seen congregating around windows and doors, which they love to eat. They can spread to several spots in just one season.

Two Types of Termites
Both of these pests can literally eat you out of your house:
  • Subterranean termites: They live in mounds with intricate systems of tunnels. They use these tunnels to find and access their above-ground food sources.
  • Drywood variety: They burrow into the wood they are eating. The only signs you might see are tiny entry tunnels. Despite their small size, they have a voracious appetite and can quickly chew their way through rafters or support beams.
